What is nervus suralis?

The nervus suralis, also known as the sural nerve, is a sensory nerve that originates from the tibial and common peroneal nerves in the popliteal fossa of the leg. It descends down the back of the leg and divides into two branches that supply sensation to the lateral and posterior aspects of the leg and foot.

The nervus suralis can be used as a donor nerve in peripheral nerve surgeries, such as nerve grafts or nerve transfers. It is also commonly used in diagnostic tests, such as nerve conduction studies and electromyography.

Damage to the nervus suralis can result in sensory deficits or neuropathic pain in the affected areas. Treatment options typically include medication for pain management or surgical interventions, such as a nerve decompression or a nerve graft.
